Walker Evans (1903-1975) gilt unangefochten als einer der einflussreichsten amerikanischen Fotografen. Sein Werk veränderte das Bewusstsein seines Landes, viele seiner Arbeiten sind fester Bestandteil des kollektiven Bildgedächtnisses. Seine kompromisslose Dokumentationen der Armut während der Wirtschaftskrise der 1930er-Jahren sind Ikonen der Fotografiegeschichte, doch häufig finden seine nicht minder wegweisenden Werke aus den folgenden Jahrzehnten weniger Beachtung. Diese Monografie widmet sich seinem Gesamtwerk und stellt mit Bedacht auch viele Fotografien vor, die nur selten gezeigt werden - darunter etwa auch die Polaroids, die Evans als letzte Arbeiten in den späten 1970er-Jahren schoss. Der stetig wachsende Einfluss seines OEuvre in diesen Jahren sowie seine symbiotische Zusammenarbeit mit John Szarkowski, dem legendären Kuratoren des New Yorker Museum of Modern Art, bilden den Mittelpunkt des Bandes. Walker Evans (1903–1975) is undisputedly one of the most influential American photographers ever. His work altered the consciousness of his country, and many of his images are fixed in collective American memory. His uncompromising documentation of poverty during the Great Depression has become an iconic part of the history of photography, yet his equally innovative works produced in the ensuing decades have met with less acclaim.
