Nevertheless, we thought we ought not to pass over in silence some of the ideas which the results of our experiments presented, and the real or apparent analogy which they show with natural phenomena. Authors are often blamed for not having understood the inference to be drawn from facts which theyhave observed, or for not having perceived the theoretic sequence, and the applications to which it may lead. We have sought to be free from this fault, which, besides, has not always foundation for it is rare for anyone who has patiently studied nature, seeking new facts, not to also meditate upon their significance, and, as nature is seen complete in each one of her manifestations, it is difficult for the student to avoid being led to generalise the result of his observ ations...
