Beiliegend eine Rezension zu dem Buch. - In the first monograph in English devoted to Bacchylides’ poetry in over twenty years, David Fearn offers an original and wide-ranging approach to the Greek lyric poet, exploring his engagement with poetic tradition and evaluating the complex relationship of the poetry to its multiple contexts of performance. Fearn shows how specific details of poetic language in Bacchylides’ manipulation of the style, diction, and mythology of the lyric and epic traditions form the heart of cultural and political engagements with a wide variety of patrons, commissioning states, and performance circumstances. His discussion of the nature of Bacchylides’ Dithyrambs rescues from obscurity a kind of narrative choral poetry that was extremely prevalent in the classical period and had a major impact on the political and cultural self-definition of communities throughout the Greek world in the fifth century BCE. Part 1 offers a new appreciation of two important but hitherto undervalued encomiastic poems, a sympotic encomium for Alexander I of Macedon, ancestor of Alexander the Great, and a magnificent epinician ode for an Aiginetan pankratiast. Part 2 argues that the kuklios khoros (or ‘circular chorus’) was the mode of performance used not only for Dionysiac dithyramb at the Athenian City Dionysia but also for a much broader range of narrative choral poems composed for festival performance across the Greek world, with no necessary connection with cults of Dionysos. This is a kind of poetry which Bacchylides’ Dithyrambs best represent. Part 2 concludes with a full discussion of one such work, entitled ‘The Sons of Antenor’, a poem which recounts the embassy of Odysseus and Menelaos to Troy; Fearn contextualizes the poem within the circumstances and ideological ramifications of performance at the Athenian Panathenaea.
