The English preparatory school is in the process of being transformed out of all recognition.Gone or at least fast disappearing are the days of congealed porridge, doses of Agaroll, petit beurre biscuits, evening chapel, bullying and eccentric masters and matrons.Arthur Marshall conducts us through an imaginary day in one such school. He does so with nostalgia and a keen sense of humour. The reader is caught on a knife edge between tragedy and comedy - for such are the ingredients of this book.Mr Marshall's text, however,is firmly rooted in reality. He has gathered letters, reminiscences from prep school boys and has hunted the pages of published literature to find material which conveys the atmosphere of these strange establishments. He writes of what it was like,in recent years or long ago,to be packed off from home at a very early age to become a pupil in one of these extremely English institutions. On one thing all seem agreed - all school boys took whatever came, whether agreeable or the converse,as being inthe natural order of things.Nobody ever dreamt of complaining, either to parents or,least of all,to the staff. There was an unconscious conspiracy of silence. It is this which Mr Marshall wishes to break before it is too late.Arthur Marshall was educated at a Hampshire prep school,Oundle and at Christ's College,Cambridge. He was a master and housemaster at Oundle from 1931-54,departing only to join the Intelligence Corps during the war. After serving asprivate secretary to Lord Rothschild he became a full-time journalist and broadcaster in 1964.He has written for the'Sunday Telegraph','Punch',the 'Listener',the 'Times Literary Supplement',the 'New Statesman',the 'New Standard'and the 'Spectator'.He is also the author of several books, including 'Girls Will Be Girls' (1974) and 'I'll Let You Know' (1981).' Tim Jaques is a designer, typographer, painter and illustrator,a keen game shot and fly-fisherman.He has contributed his witty, marvellously detailed illustrations to numerous books, including those by Jilly Cooper,Arthur Marshall and Douglas Sutherland. First paperback edition. "Why does the distinction between high and popular art persist in spite of postmodernist predictions that it should vanish? Departing from the conventional view that such distinctions are class-related, Wesley Shrum concentrates instead on the way individuals form opinions about culture through the mediation of critics. He shows that it is the extent to which critics shape the reception of an art form that determines its place in the cultural hierarchy. Those who patronize 'lowbrow' art--stand-up comedy, cabaret, movies, and popular music--do not heed critical opinions nearly as much as do those who patronize 'highbrow' art--theater, opera, and classical music. Thus the role of critics is crucial to understanding the nature of cultural hierarchy and its persistence. Shrum supports his argument through an inquiry into the performing arts, focusing on the Edinburgh Fringe, the world's largest and most diverse art festival. Beginning with eighteenth-century London playhouses and print media, where performance art criticism flourished, Shrum examines the triangle of mediation involving critics, spectators, and performers. The Fringe is shown to parallel modern art worlds, where choices proliferate along with the demand for guidance. Using interviews with critics and performers, analysis of audiences, and published reviews as well as dramatic vignettes, Shrum reveals the impact of critics on high art forms and explores the 'status bargain' in which consumers are influenced by experts in return for prestige." - Publisher.. 1st.
