From the introduction: "This is a selective exhibition of "great books," beaux livres, illustrated books by modern old masters and modern new masters, displaying the creative vitality of the arts of the French book in our century as centered in the School of Paris. Beaux livres are a far cry from our text books and trade books which, though often handsomely designed, are commercially and mechanically mass-produced to serve an essentially functional and didactic purpose. Neither are these the art of the professional book illustrator, many of whom, like Doré and Grandville in the nineteenth century, skillfully enlivened the text pages of the classics with illustrations of compelling strength, wit and imagination, but whose more limited aim was to translate into wood-engraving or etching the pictorial image of a pen drawing or painting. Rather are we concerned here with the broader dynamic of the artist's contribution to the book, what the French call the livre de peintre, the book of the painter. In the modern art of the book France has led the way, and the great flowering of this art in the twentieth century has been under her leadership. Her unique contribution has been the livre de peintre, the book in which the artist creates something that is not merely decorative illustration, but an important graphic statement in its own right. The illustration is not reproduced from an artist's drawing, but executed by his own hand, and printed by him directly or under his close supervision in an original print medium - woodcut, engraving, etching or lithography - and in a limited edition., Southern Methodist University Press, Dallas, first edition, 1967, Gingko Press Inc.. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This beautifully illustrated bookthe definitive volume on American sculptor Mark di Suverofeatures more than two hundred images of his most important works interspersed with short texts by the artist and by other writers who have inspired his art-making practice, plus a contribution by François Barré. Humanist in approach and populist in sensibility, di Suveros sculpture is accessible, inviting, and inclusive. Praised in particular for his monumental assemblages incorporating steel and wood, di Suvero emerged as a superstar in the 1960s. He was the first living artist to show his sculpture at the Tuileries Gardens, Paris, and the first honored with three major exhibitions at Storm King Art Center. His distinctive, bold pieces can be found in museums and public collections all over the world, and he continues to be the subject of numerous exhibitions both in the United States and in Europe. Mark di Suvero: Dreambook is a celebration of his artistic oeuvre and of his long, distinguished career. Mark di Suvero received both the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center and the Heinz Award for the Arts and Humanities. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 160 pages. Dimensions: 10.9in. x 8.9in. x 0.7in.Ash glaze, as the name suggests, is a glaze derived from ashes. The earliest such glazes can be traced back to the Shang period in China (c. 1500 B. C. ), and it is thought they were produced accidentally, the result of white-hot wood ash being carried through the kiln with the draft of the fire and settling onto the pots, where the searing white heat melted it to a glass. Three thousand years later, wood ash remains an important and immensely popular feature of pottery glaze making. For the modern potter, the satisfaction of working with ash glazes comes from following an ancient tradition as well as from using materials that occur naturally. The results of different wood ashes often vary dramatically, making it possible to achieve a wide range of unique finishes. Even wood from the same species of tree garnered just miles apart can produce subtly different results. In this second edition of Ash Glazes, Phil Rogers covers the history of ash glazes and proceeds to discuss the practicalities of collecting and testing wood ashes and transforming them into glazes. In the final portion of the book, he looks at the work of some leading international potters whose work is typified by the array of finishes that they achieve through their use of wood ash glazes. Images of their work offer an impressive display of the colors and techniques possible through this glazing technique. Ash Glazes has been designed as an introduction and practical handbook to the subject. It will provide inspiration for working potters and delight for all those interested in contemporary ceramics. This pamphlet prints Churchill's substantial and important 27 February 1945 speech to the House of Commons regarding the Three Powers Yalta Conference that had ended just two weeks before. The Yalta Conference, also known as The Crimea Conference, was held at the Livadia Palace near Yalta in the Crimea from 4-11 February 1945. This conference proved to be one of the geopolitically defining events of the 20th Century, fundamentally shaping the postwar world and and drawing the battle lines of the long Cold War to come. The conference was marked by fundamentally different attitudes toward Stalin on the part of Churchill and Roosevelt. Roosevelt - terminally ill and trusting - viewed massive concessions to Stalin as a hopeful path to lasting peace. By contrast, Churchill deeply distrusted Stalin's character and motivations, but had little power to resist the tide of Roosevelt's rash concessions and groundless optimism. This conference substantially determined postwar organization of Europe. In the most famous photograph of the three leaders from the Yalta conference, an unsmiling Churchill looks uncomfortable, Roosevelt affable and sickly, and Stalin leans forward, hands clasped and wearing a grin. The image proved prescient. This speech pamphlet is bound in wire-stitched paper wraps of the same cheap newsprint-quality paper on which the contents are printed. The pamphlet measures 9 x 6 inches, and is 61 pages in length. Condition is only fair owing to the fact that the paper covers are detached and chipped around the edges. Nonetheless, the binding staples are intact and the contents are crisp and clean with no spotting and no inscriptions - just age-toning of the cheap wartime paper. Tipped into the pamphlet is a neat bit of bibliographic history - a letter on British Information Services letterhead, indicating that this pamphlet was a sample copy sent to a British Information Services publications subscriber. From 1943 to June 1947, British Speeches of the Day was a British Government publication by British Information Services in New York printing "those statements by British Statesmen which present, or throw light upon, the foreign and domestic policies of the British Government, whether delivered inside or outside of Parliament." A testament to the common Transatlantic democratic cause that binds the U.S. and Britain to this day, British Speeches of the Day also printed "important speeches presenting the point of view of critics of Government policy". Since Churchill was either Prime Minister or Leader of the Opposition for the entire four year printing period, his speeches figure prominently in many issues. Due to the topical and ephemeral nature of the publication, the survival rate is low - particularly for issues preceding early 1946, which were bound in paper wraps rather than the yellow card wraps of later issues. Consequently these contemporary publications of Churchill's speeches are unknown to many collectors, as they were to the first Churchill bibliographer, Frederick Woods. The Churchill speech printed herein was subsequently printed in Victory at pp. 45-66 under the title "Results of the Three Power conference" and later still in Winston S. Churchill His Complete Speeches, Volume VII, pp. 7107-24 under the title "The Yalta Conference". The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve. This is the first anthology ever devoted to early modern Japanese literature, spanning the period from 1600 to 1900, known variously as the Edo or the Tokugawa, one of the most creative epochs of Japanese culture. This anthology, which will be of vital interest to anyone involved in this era, includes not only fiction, poetry, and drama, but also essays, treatises, literary criticism, comic poetry, adaptations from Chinese, folk stories and other non-canonical works. Many of these texts have never been translated into English before, and several classics have been newly translated for this collection. "Early Modern Japanese Literature" introduces English readers to an unprecedented range of prose fiction genres, including dangibon (satiric sermons), kibyoshi (satiric and didactic picture books), sharebon (books of wit and fashion), yomihon (reading books), kokkeibon (books of humor), gokan (bound books), and ninjobon (books of romance and sentiment). The anthology also offers a rich array of poetry - waka, haiku, senryu, kyoka, kyoshi - and eleven plays, which range from contemporary domestic drama to historical plays and from early puppet theater to nineteenth century kabuki., Since much of early modern Japanese literature is highly allusive and often elliptical, this anthology features introductions and commentary that provide the critical context for appreciating this diverse and fascinating body of texts. One of the major characteristics of early modern Japanese literature is that almost all of the popular fiction was amply illustrated by wood-block prints, creating an extensive text-image phenomenon. In some genres such as kibyoshi and gokan, the text in fact appeared inside the woodblock image. Woodblock prints of actors were also an important aspect of the culture of kabuki drama. A major feature of this anthology is the inclusion of over 200 woodblock prints that accompanied the original texts and drama. ., University Presses of California, Columbia and Princeton, 2002, Huntington Woods, MI.: Phantasia Press, 1982 , 1st Edition, 1st Printing, 1982. -----------hardcover, a Fine copy in a Fine dustjacket, housed in a Near Fine slipcase with a bit of sunning and dustiness, signed by ELLISON, number 694 of 700 copies, contents include: Foreword by Stephen King; Introduction, Quiet Lies the Locust Tells; Grail; The Outpost Undiscovered by Tourists; Visionary (with Joe L. "Imagine a gold and mercury image on a layer of silver bonded to copper, an all-metal photographic process that poisoned some its practitioners. Imagine an era long before a surfeit of images began to dull the viewer, when a visual reality, not a virtual one, captivated the imagination. The daguerreotype process is not only 'one of the great artistic vehicles for rendering the human face', says John Wood, but an equally potent and elegant means of rendering a scenic image. The author has assembled the largest collection of daguerreotypes ever seen in book form, including Jean-Louis-Baptiste Gros' masterful studies of the Acropolis and the Seine and Joseph Wilhelm Pero's striking images of Lubeck, Germany" (Publisher's blurb). Eliot Porter. The images comprise: Mt. Desert Island, Maine; Everglades, Florida; Great Spruce Head Island, Maine; Adirondacks; Grand Canyon; to the Great Smoky Mountains. Printed in association with Chanticleer Press, Inc., New York, and Amilcare Pizzi, Milan, Italy. Around 1930 Porter was introduced to Ansel Adams by a friend of the family and to Alfred Stieglitz by his brother Fairfield Porter. Stieglitz continued to critique Porters black and white work, now taken with a small Linhof view camera. In 1938, Stieglitz showed Porter's work in his New York City gallery. The exhibit's success prompted Porter to leave Harvard and pursue photography full-time. In the 1940s, he began working in color with Eastman Kodak's new dye transfer process, a technique Porter would use his entire career. Porter's reputation increased following the publication of his 1962 book, In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World. Published by the Sierra Club, the book featured Porter's color nature studies of the New England woods and quotes by Henry David Thoreau. A best-seller, several editions of the book have been printed. Porter served as a director of the Sierra Club from 1965 to 1971. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1971. Porter traveled extensively to photograph ecologically important and culturally significant places. He published books of photographs from Glen Canyon in Utah, Maine, Baja California, Galápagos Islands, Antarctica, East Africa, and Iceland. His cultural studies included Mexico, Egypt, China, Czechoslovakia, and ancient Greek sites. James Gleicks book Chaos: Making a New Science (1987) caused Porter to reexamine his work in the context of chaos theory. They collaborated on a project published in 1990 as Nature's Chaos, which combined his photographs with a new essay by Gleick. One of the more interesting topics in exploring santos is their iconography, the study of the symbols that make up an image or an ensemble of images. An iconographic study identifies symbolic forms such as attributes and signs such as clothing, posture, and context, which establish the identity, context, and history of a santo. Iconographic studies can establish direct links between the ways santos were venerated and represented in Europe and in Puerto Rico, where iconographic motifs were not merely repeated: the islands people proceeded to create their own interpretations. For the first time ever, in-depth research has been made into the history of the women who have led fashions in diamond jewellery. Strangely enough, these women are often synonymous with charisma, intelligence and audacity. They are not just mad about diamonds, they are above all examples for their generation. They set new trends with their life-style, their dress sense and their jewels. This is a beautiful story, where at each stage of human civilisation, women have gradually found freedom. Although they may have been seen as scandalous at the time, they all contribute to the development of the image of the free woman. Every era has its Diva and each Diva must be seen from the point of view of her era. First came the women of power such as Elizabeth I of England, or Catherine II (the Great) of Russia who were both very conscious of the importance of their image. Their image of power, so often expressed by sumptuous jewellery, took other monarchs by surprise. Louis XIV and Napoleon also understood how to put diamond jewellery to great use. For a long time, the court of France was an example of splendour and monarchical power. Others later followed this example by ordering majestic collections of jewellery. Later, in the 19th Century, rich women and wives of industrial leaders gave in to the temptation of possessing many diamonds as symbols of their wealth. Others, such as Empress Elizabeth of Austria or Eugenie of France led fashions due to their notoriety and their beauty. They become symbols of elegance. Legends such as Sarah Bernhardt, Gloria Swanson, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor or the Duchess of Windsor are often associated with their jewellery, as if the jewels were part of the Diva herself. These women still remain an inspiration for many designers and jewellery houses. In the USA, women such as Doris Duke, Daisy Fellowes or Barbara Hutton are known for their legendary jewellery collection and their exquisite taste. Princess Grace of Monaco, Jackie Kennedy and even Marilyn Monroe remind us of mythical moments such as a wedding, a public appearance, a scene of a film which we will always associate with a certain crown or necklace. Even today, exceptional women wear the world's most beautiful jewellery. If only at events in Cannes or in Holly- or Bolly- wood, our Divas will always be inspiring.. The book, marvellously illustrated plunges the reader into this fascinating story of Diamond Divas. Also, every card shows a Green Man image, some easily spotted, whilst others are more difficult to find, and all are viewed through a Gothic archway. The cards are accompanied by a one-hundred-and-twenty-five page book, the quality of which matches the cards themselves. The edges of the pages bear a pencil-drawn image of the Green Man and the book gives information about the origins and importance of the Ogham alphabet and the sacredness of trees. The chapter on divination is titled 'Turning the Leaves, Receiving the Wisdom of the Woods', which is a very appropriate phrasing for this kind of deck. Each card has a key phrase, e.g. ' Apple - vision lights the way ahead'; 'Aspen - where all are gathered, strength is strongest'; 'Spindle - destiny moves us to do great things'. The explanations of each card all give divinatory meanings and lore-of-the-tree, along with other sections as appropriate e.g. 'Faery Fruit', 'Goddesses of the Woods', 'Trees of resurrection' and 'The Many-Gifted God'.This deck is absolutely beautiful, sumptuous even. In my opinion it is a misnomer to say the pictures are 'illustrations', rather, they are works of art. I can't recommend this deck highly enough. Work with it and you will soon be finding green men everywhere you go! (Reader review) 128 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 750 grams. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN, Momence,IL, Commerce,GA., University of Pennsylvania Press, New York: British Information Services, 1945. 1st Edition. Paperback. Fair. Includes an important bibliography on the subject. Aristotle Onassis said: "If women didn't exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning"...and he is right! New book., BE B.A.I. 2007, Connections Book Publishing, 2003. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Box is worn and rubbed at the edges, book is bright and unmarked, all 25 Green Man cards are present and unmarked in excellent condition. This stunning twenty-five card oracle deck is a system of divination based on the Green Man. Each card depicts a different tree, and the name of each tree is in turn linked to a letter of the Ogham alphabet.
