Seit 1977, abgetörnt vom Austropop und aufgestachelt vom englischen Punk, die Band Willi Warma das Café Landgraf zum Linzer Marquee Club umfunktionierte, ist stattdessen eine höchst aktive Musikszene in Bewegung, die alternativen Spielarten und Strukturen hohen Stellenwert beimisst. "Es muss was geben" geht den Entwicklungslinien dieser Szene nach. Als Erzählung der Protagonisten selbst. Zu Wort kommen dabei u.a. Linzer Bands wie Willi Warma, Miss Molly's Favourites, Fuckhead, Attwenger, Musiker von Texta und Shy, genauso wie die Schauspielerin Sophie Rois. Und so kann ich behaupten, dass ich damals den Gedanken an eine Dokumentation der Linzer Musikszene wieder aufgriff. Diesmal nicht als Stammbaum, sondern als Buch. Und nicht etwa um knietief in Nostalgie zu waten oder wild herumzuinterpretieren, sondern um (eine) Geschichte aufzuzeichnen, die sonst bestenfalls aus Fußnoten und unzulässigen Beiträgen in Zeitungen und Magazinen zusammengetragen werden könnte. Wie ich die Geschichte erzählen würde, wusste ich sofort. Das verdankte ich "Bill Graham Presents" von Robert Greenfield. In diesem 1992 im Verlag Zweitausendeins auf Deutsch erschienenen Buch über den "erfolgreichsten Rock-Impresario der USA" kommen die Protagonisten ausnahmslos selbst zu Wort. Teils einhellig, teils widersprüchlich schildern sie Erlebnisse mit Bill Graham aus ihrer jeweiligen Perspektive. Ich hielt das für die beste Methode, um den verschiedenen Ansichten und Motivationen, aber letztendlich auch den Gemeinsamkeiten der Linzer Musikszene gerecht zu werden.
