Most of the houses are built according to the orders of architecture; and carriages in the street roll along smoothly on flat stones laid in parallel lines like iron railways, leaving the rest of the pavement sufficiently rough to afford safe footing to the horses. Much of the present neat appearance of the city is, I am told, due to the Austrian government. One of the first things we inquired after was the celebrated textit{Lord's Supper of Leonardo da Vinci, which we have just now seen. It is painted on the wall of a low hall, and occupies a whole side of it,? that is, about 30 feet in length by 15 in height: it is not a fresco, but an oil painting; and the parts which have not peeled off are grown of a dingy black : in short, it is a mere shadow of what it was three hundred years ago, and in a comparatively short time no trace of it will remain. Our books say,?I do not know on whose authority,?that the artist having exhausted his genius in painting the Apostles, left his Christ imperfect :?to me the countenance of this Christ appeared admirable. Wishing to ascertain whether Eustace's accusation against the French, of having used this textit{chef cTceuvre as a target to fire at, and of having aimed at the head of our Saviour in preference, was true, I examined the picture closely; and certainly discovered a number of round holes like balls plugged up with something like putty, and likewise dents in the wall, apparently the effect of brickbats thrown against it, fragments of which still remained in some of the holes.
