The exhibition draws from private lenders and institutional collections. With appreciations by Theresa Hammond, Ara Serjoie, Peter Geraty, and Karen Hanmer, and an essay by Lallier herself. Monique Lallier is known for her creative and thoughtful approaches to the subjects of her binding projects. Her use of unusual materials such as eggshells, pewter, colorful wires, agates, lizard and snake skin -- even her own hair -- and innovative techniques including cutouts, reveals, pop-ups, and moveable parts make her bindings both distinctive and dynamic. Her binding of My Antonia by Willa Cather won a Best Binding award in an international exhibition at the Chicago Public Library in 2006. Her 2016 binding of Pantagruel was awarded a Silver Prize at the International Competition of Designer Bookbinders. Lallier supplies entertaining descriptions of the bindings from the maker's perspective, telling brief stories of projects and processes. Each binding is illustrated with expert color photographs, often from several angles and in various states of openness and closure. The variety of design, material, and technique make for a surprise on every page and an extraordinary collective impression. Monique Lallier has served as director of the American Academy of Bookbinding and president of the Association des Relieurs du Quebec. In 2010 the Guild of Book Workers (New York) presented her with the Laura Young award for service as Chair of the Standards of Excellence annual conference from 1988 to 2000. This copy is NOT signed by the author. Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 - June 29, 2003) was an American actress of film, stage and television. Hepburn's career as a Hollywood leading lady spanned over 60 years. She was known for her headstrong independence, spirited personality and outspokenness, cultivating a screen persona that matched this public image, and regularly playing strong-willed, sophisticated women. She received four Academy Awards for Best Actressa record for any performer. In 1999, Hepburn was named the greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute. Hepburn found a niche playing middle-aged spinsters, such as in The African Queen (1951), a persona the public embraced. Hepburn earned three more Oscars for her work in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), and On Golden Pond (1981). In the 1970s, she began appearing in television films, which later became her focus. She made her final screen appearance at the age of 87. With her unconventional lifestyle and the independent characters she brought to the screen, Hepburn epitomized the "modern woman" in the 20th-century United States, and was an important cultural figure. Billy Joe "BJ" Thomas (August 7, 1942 - May 29, 2021) was an American singer widely known for his pop, country, and Christian hits of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. He made popular recordings of "Hooked on a Feeling" (1968), "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (1969), "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" (1975), "Don't Worry Baby" (1977) and "Whatever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love" (1983). In 1966, Thomas and the Triumphs released the album I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Pacemaker Records), featuring a hit cover of the Hank Williams song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". The single sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. The follow-up single, "Mama", peaked at No. 22. In the same year, Thomas released a solo album of the same title on the Scepter Records label. Thomas came back to achieve mainstream success again in 1968, first with "The Eyes of a New York Woman", then five months later with the much bigger "Hooked on a Feeling", which featured the sound of Reggie Young's electric sitar and was first released on the album On My Way (Scepter Records). "Hooked on a Feeling" became Thomas' second million-selling record. A year later, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid featured Thomas performing the Bacharach/David song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", which won the Academy Award for best original song that year and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1970. Its sales also exceeded one million copies, with Thomas being awarded his third gold record. The song was also released on an album of the same title. His other hits of the 1970s included "Everybody's Out of Town", "I Just Can't Help Believing" (No. 9 in 1970, covered by Elvis Presley), "No Love at All", "Mighty Clouds of Joy", and "Rock and Roll Lullaby". On December 3, 2013, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced that his 1969 single "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" would be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
