Auf seinen nächtlichen Streifzügen durch die "City of London", das historische Herz der Stadt und eines der globalen Finanzzentren, fängt Andreas Schmidt (*1967) hellsichtige Bilder ein. Wie in seinem Band Las Vegas, über eine andere glitzernde Fassadenwelt, dokumentiert er auch hier den verführerischen Glanz der Paläste, verliert dabei aber nie deren menschenverachtende Maßlosigkeit aus dem Blick. Denn obwohl Hunderttausende in der City arbeiten, ist ihr Maßstab kein menschlicher. Alles ist überdimensioniert, aus Stahl, Glas und Marmor und mit sinnfreien Zierelementen versehen. Nur Notausgänge oder Büropflanzen haben Normalmaß und wirken absurd. Die menschenleeren Lobbys, Konferenzräume und endlosen Flure genügen dem Corporate Design, strahlen jedoch vor allem Macht und Kälte aus. Wie das Buchcover beweist, schmückte sich bereits die altehrwürdige Bank of England mit riesenhaften Hoheitsformeln: Die neoklassizistische Fassade von Sir John Soane aus dem Jahr 1828 galt zudem als für Unbefugte unüberwindbar.
