As explained in the preface: The challenges of genuinely participatory archaeology are considerable. Archaeology is a highly specialised craft, often conducted under the pressure of time in rescue archaeology, or with strict grant conditions to be met; it can be frustrating; and it requires patience and attention. In the past, the public were kept out, rather than welcomed in. Yet as we show in this edition, the rewards of engagement with communities and the wider public are great, and the outcomes important.
