Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1988. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 5.5" X 8.75. H/B. 212 pages, condition is Very good. The culmination of the horribly real story begun in Frigate and Carrier, this book is both an indictment of the existing strategic policies of the great powers and a tribute to the men whose lives are at risk now and in war. An out-dated, expendable diesel submarine, Orcus; is despatched on a near-suicidal patrol in Soviet waters. The success of her mission is a vital part of the main operation to which the British nuclear submarine, the 'hunter-killer' Safari, is committed: the destruction of the giant Soviet underwater battleship, Typhoon. In following the movements of both submarines, John Wingate assesses Nato's chances in the final stages of the hot war which exploded in the first two novels of the trilogy. Deep below the polar ice, Janner Coombes, captain of Safari, stalks his prey, his crew tensed for action. They are completely on their own; because of enforced radio silence and radar restrictions to prevent Soviet detection, they have no way of knowing Orcus' fate. The Typhoon is eight times Safari's size and carries enough nuclear warheads to demolish most of the Western world: as Coombes and his men automatically carry out their drills, they are all too aware that any encounter between the two highly-charged submarines can end only in a fight to the death., Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1988<
