Diese Installation hat am 25. September 2010 begonnen und wird noch bis mindestens Oktober 2015 [veraltet] zu sehen sein. Es handelt sich um zwölf jeweils drei Meter hohe Tierköpfe aus Bronze , die Ai mehrmals rekonstruiert und auch in einer kleineren aus Bronze vergoldeten, ?museumstauglichen? Version hergestellt hat. Der »Circle of Animals « besteht aus über zwölf riesigen bronzenen Tierköpfen auf Pfählen, jeder stellt ein anderes Motiv aus dem chinesischen Tierkreis dar. Ai Weiweis erstes Werk im öffentlichen Raum bezieht sich auf eine ähnliche Arbeit, die für ein kaiserliches Refugium im achtzehnten Jahrhundert erbaut wurde. Dieses Buch vergleicht Ai Weiweis Arbeit mit der Original-Skulptur; beinhaltet Interviews mit dem Künstler während des Entstehungsprozesses, einen historischen Überblick über die historischen Ereignisse, erzählt die fesselnde Geschichte hinter einem hoch gelobten Objekt moderner Kunst und bietet gleichzeitig eine Einführung in das Werk eines der wichtigsten Künstler unserer Gegenwart, der in seiner Heimat China menschenverachtende Misshandlung und Haft ertragen musste. // Circle of Animals features twelve enormous bronze animal heads, each depicting a segment of the Chinese zodiac. Ai Weiwei's first piece of public art, it is an extraordinary accomplishment in its own right. Ai Weiwei based the sculpture on a similar work that was built for an imperial retreat in the eighteenth century. When the palace was looted by European soldiers, the sculpture was stolen-only seven of the twelve heads survive. By reimagining the work Ai Weiwei confronts uncomfortable truths within Chinese and Western history.
