Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE APPEAL TO ROME Bisiiop Matgrot lost no time in transmitting his edict to Rome and appealing to the Pope for his confirmation of it. In order to estimate the feeling of the Court of Rome upon the whole controversy, we must have recourse to a Roman writer of paramount authority on such a subject, the biographer of Clement XL, Cardinal Albano, who, aided by the Abate Polidori, became the historian of his uncle's pontificate:? " If Clement deserved well of the Churches of Asia for any kind of special benefit, in this fourth year of the century [1704], it was assuredly for the condemnation of the wicked rites involving certain sacrifices derived from gentile superstition, offered to the Heaven, to the Philosopher Confucius, and to the departed ancestors of the Chinese. These the preachers of the Society of Jesus contended could be exercised without injury to the Catholic faith; others, especially the brethren of the order of Friars Preachers, denying and resisting them, as likewise the Vicars-Apostolicand the secular clergy of the mission. The missionaries of the Society declared these rites for the dead, solemnised with a special ceremonial, to have merely a civil character; others maintained that they were of a religious nature, and proved this by solid reasons and grounds. Nor were there wanting outsiders who held with the Jesuits, while in the Society itself there were some who differed from their brethren. The first to discover to Pope Urban VIII. and to bring before the Apostolic See the pernicious character of these ceremonies was John Baptist Morales, an eminent divine of the order of Friars Preachers. He, after he had devoted many years of the most useful labour to the propagation of the orthodox faith in the Empire of China, and had often been present...
