Volume 31 of History of Technology includes the equivalent of two issues of a journal in a hardcover book format edited by Ian Inkster (Insititute of Historical Research, U. of London). The first is Conceptualizing the Production and Diffusion of Useful and Reliable Knowledge in Early Modern Europe. The term "useful knowledge" is now used in academic history circles to replace the terms "science" and "technology," on the grounds that it is less socially loaded and more accurate for cultures whose concepts do not match contemporary European ideas of science and technology. This section of the book wrestles with the question of what "useful knowledge" means, and whether the core idea of a type of knowledge whose prime purpose is economic gain is indeed unique to European societies, or modern European societies. The second issue is Patent Agency in History: Intellectual Property and Technological Change. It discusses intellectual property rights as a driving force in the control and spread of information related to industrialization. Contributors respond to the current explosion of interest in intellectual property rights in a digital age, and point out that historical study of the patent process has been limited. The difficulty is that there is little information available beyond the records of who was certified as a patent agent and what patents were registered. Before such records were kept, and in places where rights are not established or controlled through formal patent agents, historians have a hard time tracing what intellectual property rights meant, or how they were established or maintained. As a result, scholars weigh in here on patents in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most contributors to this book are European scholars of history; a few are US-based, a few are economists, one focuses on architecture. All write in English.
