Les changements intervenus sur le marché français de la fleur coupée sont représentatifs du niveau européen, notamment la consolidation du commerce de détail traditionnellement très fragmenté. La GMS (Grande et Moyenne Surface) puis les fleuristes franchisés, sont à l'origine de cette consolidation qui a eu pour conséquence la réorganisation de l'ensemble de la chaîne d'approvisionnement. Une des principales conséquences de cette restructuration est le renforcement des liens entre détaillants, importateurs et producteurs étrangers. Alors que les détaillants ont supprimé certains intermédiaires tels que les cadrans hollandais, les importateurs ont renforcé leur rôle en se concentrant. La prise de contrôle de la chaîne par les détaillants a alors impacté les producteurs par les exigences en termes de volume, d'innovation, de prix compétitifs et de standards de qualité. Elle a surtout entraîné une intégration de la production vers l'aval et a exclue du marché une partie des petits producteurs non organisés. Le cas du Brésil confirme que l'organisation du secteur productif est la condition essentielle de son accès à un marché aujourd'hui piloté par les détaillants européens.
