It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" (ODNB). This set has the early state of the Dombey and Son Advertiser in part XIII ("October, 1847" unbroken on p. 1). The errata in part XIX & XX in the preferred two line state. All but one of the called for issue points are in their earliest states, with "capatin" in part XI at p. 324, as the "earliest issue"; for part XIV the word "if" on p. 426 is omitted also stated as the "earliest issue", although p. 431 is numbered correctly, whereas they call for it to be omitted in "earlier copies". The rear cover to part XVIII is a variant to that called for by Hatton and Cleaver with the header "Public Applause" in place of the called for"The Spring Season". As often there are a few trivial variations to the rear adverts as called for by Hatton & Cleaver: part III lacking rear ads (1), (3), and (4); part V with an uncalled for 2 pp. ad for The National Cyclopedia and lacking the errata slip; part X lacking rear ad (2); part XI lacking the rear slip; part XII the rear ad for Kaye's Worsdell's Pills is a variant with the header "Important Testimonials" in place of "Question! Question! Question!"; part XVI lacking Punch slip at front and rear ad; part XVII lacking the front slip and rear ad; part XIX lacking rear ads (3), (4), & (5), ad (2) only 4 pp. and ad (6) only 6 pp. Copies almost never conform exactly to Hatton & Cleaver's exhaustive collation. Eckel, pp. 74-76; Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 227-250. 20 numbers bound in 19 monthly parts as issued. Original green wrappers printed in black, the textual numbers with designs by Phiz. Housed in 2 custom straight-grain morocco-backed marbled paper board and cloth chemises. With 40 etched and lithographic plates by Phiz (Hatton and Cleaver noting there is no priority of issue between the etchings and lithographs); plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Morocco book label of one William Bunker to neatly repaired chemises. Neat ownership inscriptions to head of front wrappers of part IV, VI, VIII, IX, XVII. Wrappers slightly browned, creasing and nicks to extremities, overall a very good set. Plates browned in part VI, IX, XVII, small paper repair to part XIX & XX.<
